12 Month Story
Bertha is often confused but continues to state that she enjoys the food and meals, but particularity likes the between meal supplements/snacks. Since the hospice decision was made yesterday, you also begin to discuss with Bertha. You tell her "Bertha we are adjusting your care and were wondering if there are any special foods that you would like to have, anything that you really just want to taste?" Bertha starts to tell you that she is going to have to figure out what to fix for supper for herself and her husband. She goes through her thought process and describes her various choices (I am thinking about some smoked pork chops, I haven't had them for a very long time...but I think I would just really like some sausage. I haven't has sausage for a really long time.) Let her finish telling you about all that she is going to fix for supper with her husband. (You do not try to remind her that her husband is dead and that she is living in a residential care facility). Then you change the subject... "Now, let's talk a bit about your breakfast tomorrow morning, would you like to have some sausage wtih your eggs?". Bertha agrees that it sounds like a great idea.
