Welcome to Nutrition Care Professionals

Our cases are designed to simulate a real-world dietetic consultation. Your task is to apply the Nutrition Care Process (NCP) end-to-end, linking background evidence to patient-specific assessment, diagnosis, intervention, and monitoring/evaluation (M&E) — while demonstrating professional, ethical dietetic practice.

What you will develop

  • Clinical reasoning: Synthesise nutrition assessment data and diet-related behaviour change.

  • Fluent use of NCP terminology: Generate accurate PES statements and align interventions and M&E indicators with the patient’s needs.

  • Consultation skills: Structure an effective consultation through a series of activities based on the NCP pathway.

  • Communication skills: Work with cultural humility, clarity, and safety.

  • Practice competence: Elicit context (language, beliefs, food practices, health literacy) and adapt care respectfully and effectively.

Access Case Instructions
  1. Orient to the Learning Objectives (10 minutes)
Begin by reading the case Learning Objectives. Use them to guide your preparation, consultation plan, and post-consultation reflection.

  2. Go to the Perspective and Resource tabs and complete background reading (60-90 minutes)
Refresh your knowledge of medical nutrition therapy (e.g. the physiology of the condition, risk factors, health outcomes, new medications, counselling and behaviour change). Remember later to connect concepts in the literature to case assessment data and intervention planning.

  3. Review the Mind Maps for NCP terms and codes relating to AWM (20-30 minutes)
Review NCP taxonomy for obesity-related NCP terms and codes. Clarify links between assessment data, signs/symptoms, etiologies, interventions and measurable outcomes for M&E.

  4. Review your patient's story and diet history (40 minutes)
Examine your patient’s medical history, diet history, anthropometrics, biochemistry, medications/supplements, social determinants, and food context. Formulate information-gathering priorities which will confirm your diagnoses and aid you in the development of interventions.

  5. Complete the case activities

    • First case activity completion: ≈ 5 hours

    • Subsequent cases: = 60-90 minutes

  6. Document and evaluate (20 minutes)
Complete an ADIME note using correct NCP terminology, including:

    • Assessment: targeted, clinically relevant data only.

    • Diagnosis: precise PES statements prioritised forthe clinical condition.

    • Intervention: specific nutrition prescriptions, education/counselling strategies, and referrals.

    • Monitoring & Evaluation: clear indicators, time frames, and follow-up modality.

  7. Reflect on your competencey development
Briefly analyse what supported or hindered your progress through the Activities

Professional Expectations

  • Ground all decisions in current, high-quality evidence and accepted clinical guidelines.

  • Answer activities with precision, empathy, and cultural humility; document with accuracy and clarity.

When you complete these steps, you will have demonstrated the ability to deliver evidence-based, culturally responsive dietetic care for the clinical condition—preparing you for an encounter in the clinical setting.
