NCPro Virtual Learning Environment
The NCPro VLE is a single destination for evidence-based dialogue, authentic patient experiences and competency-based learning and assessment. NCPro case studies provide comprehensive, authentic clinical experience for students in the classroom to prepare them for intership. The NCPro case studies provide virtual clinical time.
 

✓  Dietetic Competency
Case studies meet international dietetic competency standards particular to the International Confederation of Dietetic Associations, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, and the Dietetics Association of Australia. The competency-based learning is based on course objectives which tie into university curricula.
 

✓ Knowledge and Skill-based Learning
Occurs through exposure to authentic clinical experiences.
 

✓ Comprehensive Knowledge of the NCP
On completion of the cases students should have acquired:

• Comprehensive knowledge of each step of the NCP through exposure to authentic clinical experiences and access to current MNT theory
   
• Insight into the thought processes of a practicing dietitian during the consultation process
   
• A sound understanding of Nutrition Assessment and Diagnosis and skill in drawing together information required to formulate an effective Nutrition Prescription and Intervention strategy
   
• The ability to prioritise Nutrition Diagnosis and to revise the Diagnosis in the event of new patient information 
   
• The capacity to formulate Evolving Care Plans which acknowlege the changing needs of the patient
   
• The ability to monitor and evaluate the patient in follow-up consultations
   

NCPro Clinical Case Simulations 
Each case study provides a comprehensive, authentic clinical experience for under- and post grad. students, interns and dietitians in practice. The NCPro case studies are designed to provide virtual clinical time.
 

The comprehensive cases include the following components:  
 

✓  Learning Objectives 
Concise statements describing the knowedge and skills acquired upon completion of the case.

✓ Perspective
Case-specific literature reviews. 
 

✓ Case-specific Readings and Resources
Hyperlinks to up-to-date clinical guidelines, research papers, important websites and relevant learning material. 
 

✓ Story
Detailed background information on the patient's health including presenting medical complaint, past medical history and social/family history. The patient's history is derived from patient interviews, written notes and/or electronic health record.
 

✓ Diet History
A 24-hour recall or food frequency questionnaire completed by the patient, a food check-list and detailed food descriptions and nutrient analysis of culturally specific foods where relevant.
 

✓ Activities
Skill- and knowledge-based questions which drive learning and bed-down dietetic competencies.
 

✓ Evaluation
To determine if users are ready to provide care in the clinical setting.
 

✓ Practice Considerations
Highlighted inclusions called “Practice Considerations” make explicit the critical thinking and judgments arising routinely in dietetic practice.

• The Practice Considerations assist students by highlighting critical evidence-based information requiring the dietitians consideration, application and reflection
   
• Practice Considerations assist dietitians in guiding and strengthening their critical thinking skills around unfamiliar clinical conditions

The NCPro case studies are specifically designed to provide virtual clinical time.
 

Practicing Dietitians Enhance thier Knowledge and Skill by: 

✓  Reviewing patient history to determine a need to peruse hyperlinked resources provided in the case and other resources consistent with current practice/employment setting, e.g. nutrition care manual, policies and procedures, evidence-based nutrition practice guidelines.
 

✓ Reviewing the electronic health record and consultation request.
 

✓  Reviewing the patient's nutrition clinic forms, e.g. 24-hour recall or food-frequency questionnaires.
 

✓  Consultation begins: Conducting interview, determining the nutrition problem(s) , and counselling approach, conducting the intervention.
 

✓  Documenting care according to practice setting using the NCP as a framework for documentation.
 

✓  Examining performance based on institutional guidelines, may include evaluation based on patient outcomes.
