Occasional Foods using Exchange System
Various terms are used internationally to describe foods which are high in energy, fat, sugar and/or sodium. These terms include “discretionary foods”, “foods to enjoy sometimes” and “occasional foods”. For the purposes of this text, we described them as “occasional foods”. As shown in Mr Robertson’s diet history, occasional foods contribute significantly towards his total energy intake. Some, such as cookies and nuts, are eaten daily: these are managed as mixed foods in the Nutrition Analysis tables ahead.
In this case study the following foods are managed as mixed foods.
This list will help you to complete this case study quickly.
» 2 shortbread cookies = 2 fat, 1 sweets & alt. carb
» 2 cream-filled cookies = 1 fat, 1 sweets & alt. carb
» 3 teaspoons jelly = 3 teaspoons sugar = 1 sweets & alt. carb
» 1 cup (~2 scoops) of ice cream = 4 fat, 2 sweets & alt. carb
» 1 sausage patty (2 small links) = 2 high fat meat
» 1 handful of mixed nuts, ~35–40 nuts (1 oz [30 g] nuts) = 3 fat)
Mr Robertson has other occasional foods once a week, such as fruit cake and chocolate-coated ice cream. Record these items in the occasional foods column of the nutritional analysis table on the following page. Mr Robertson drinks alcohol five days a week. Record alcohol in the occasional foods column for later consideration.
In this case study the following foods are managed as occasional foods.
» 1 small donut = 150 kcal
» 1 large slice of fruit cake = 360 kcal
» 1 fun-size chocolate = 100 kcal
» 1 packet potato chips, 3 ½ oz (100 g) = 500 kcal
» 1 chocolate-coated ice cream = 330 kcal
» 1 can of beer, 12 fl oz (375 mL) = 150 kcal
Note — the energy content for mixed food items and occasional food items listed in calories is rounded for ease of calculation.
