Etiology (E) is the “root cause” of the Problem (P) and serves as the basis for the Nutrition Interventions selected.
The Developing PES Statement Activity provides guidance for PES statement evaluation.
Use the following criteria to evaluate the quality of your Nutrition Diagnosis Statements.
Can the dietitian resolve the Nutrition Diagnosis?
If deciding between two diagnoses that describe the situation in different ways, aim to select as your first preference the one that belongs in the Intake Domain.
Is the etiology the “Root Cause” or “Real Cause” of the problem?
Will measuring the “Signs and Symptoms” tell you if the problem is resolved?
Are the “Signs and Symptoms” specific enough that they can be measured?
