Practice Consideration
Fruits, Vegetables and Weight Loss
In the data and literature reviewed to inform revisions of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, there was modest evidence found to support an association between increased fruit and vegetable intake and reduced risk of excess body weight, with a trend towards decreased weight gain over five or more years in middle adulthood associated with increased fruit and vegetable intake.(50,58,73)
Note: The 2015 US Dietary Guidelines Conclusion also concluded there was modest evidence that adherence to a dietary pattern that emphasizes vegetables, fruits and whole grains is associated with modest benefits in preventing weight gain or promoting weight loss in adults.
